Chiu Fux states:- I as the master of the Juna Tang lo. It is at Ping Chau. I am dredging this year also in the 28th. and 29th, years. I stopped from the 5th. moog of last year for 2 months. I stopped on account of the Company. The lime burners refused to pay the taxes to the Company. They only paid me 1.2 mpce per tau and I had to pay 2 candareens to the Company. I get now I race 2 candareans. The line
burners pay the taxes. I am just as well off now as before. I do not
want compensation but only to get rid of the taxes. Then I could iạ- crease my price. Everything is dear. It is very difficult to employ fokis. The foxis divide the profit after deducting the excenses. I gathered 10,000 tau last year and it was not a good your. I used to get 1,400 and 1,500 tau a year in good weather pears. I had a few months hindrance last year because the line burners refused to pay the' taxes. The expense is about 70 tesis a month for the whole junk. I sel my chells now to Tex Mo, Sun Yi and Wing Ho Cheung the last witness's business. I collect ther all st Ping Chau. I live at Sai Heung near Nam Tou and on my junk. 1 go home 8 or 4 times a year. My father gathered 20 years and I have gathered shells 10 years, I engage fokis I got a trading business licence from the Chinese Government but not
e licence for dredging, the treding licence covers that. There is no such law in Ohias as a licence for dredging. I never heard of such a licence.
The Petitiog was got up by our shell junks and not by the lime burners. That was before the line burners paid the taxes to the Company. Under present circumstances, I would not have sent in my Petition to the Government. My business is going down. I can't get 1.4 mace at Sham Shui Po but only 1.8 mace at Ping Chau, but the Sham Shuil Po burners refuse to pay the taxes to the Company.
